The best rooting of cuttings occurred when the cuttings were taken in June and was fastest in the species itself and in its green leafed cultivar 'Monique'. The rooting period was 35% longer in the variegated cultivar 'Starlight' compared with the species. Irradiation of cuttings during root formation with red light (600nm) significantly accelerated root formation in all cultivars tested (which included ''Reginald' and 'Variegata'), while far-red (730nm) slowed down rooting. Red light significantly shortened the rooting period of cuttings taken from stock plants of 'Monique' irradiated with monochromatic light during their culture, while no effect of far red light was observed.
