The Begonia Breeders Association in Holland (Dümmen, Florema and Van Zanten) has recently purchased the entire Begonia breeding program from German breeder Josef Heuger, including patent rights. The bicolour range of Heuger varieties, in particular, has created a good market in recent times and some new varieties such as 'Monella' and 'Polly' are about to be introduced. Exisiting Heuger varieties will complement BBA's existing assortment and the gene pool will be useful to BBA's breeding work. A spokesman for Joseph Heuger said that it was a logical move, leaving their Company to concentrate on their breeding programs with Helleborus, Gentiana and Hydrangea.
