A new biological control for vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) is avialable from Becker Underwood after 10 years of research at the Horticulture Research Institute, Wellesbourne, England. The product called 'Nemasys' consists of a naturally occurring nematode Steinernema kraussei that is active at temperatures as low as 5°C (as opposed to 12°C required by the previously tried Heterorhabditis megidis). Namasys can be used by growers and gardeners from March to November and should allow control to be established in the autumn months when vine weevil larvae cause the most damage (which only becomes apparent in the spring).
