Ivy-leaf geraniums (Pelargonium peltanum) from Red Fox (Dümmen), Fischer, Elsner, Endisch, Fgb, Selecta and Goldsmith were the subject of trials in 2002 at the Po di Tramontana Horticultural Experimental Station, Veneto. Of the group with a typically vigorous growth, Fiorella Decora Lilla, pelfi Narina 98, Eleonore, pac Granatit and gen Avila were found to be early flowering in the trials. Averagely early were: pelfi Fiorella Acapulco (abundant flowers and good flower heads), Red Blizzard (big bright red flowers), Beach 98 (optimum bunching, good flower contrast with bright green leaves), pac Tomgirl (new introduction with large deep purple flowers), Eliana (floriferous). In the late flowering varieties under trial, red fox Merlona (dark purple flowers) and Freestyle Dark Red had good all round qualities. Of the more compact growing varieties, early flowering was found in: sel Royal Night (dark purple flowers), gen Starlight Amethist (floriferous with medium sized flower heads). Amongst the most outstanding were: fgb Meriblue and Meririco, producing abundant flowers, deep purple and red respectively. Gen Indio Pink was very floriferous with bright pink flowers. The Salmon, Pink and White varieties in the Freestyle series (from Goldsmith, in the 2° year of trials, proved floriferous and early flowering. Cherry Rose and Light lavender were not as early. Averagly early varieties included: Royal Candy Cane (a novelty from Selecta) producing red-white bicolour flowers and two new introductions from Dümmen; Lira and Zara, both with large flowers, respectively bright red and Fuchsia. Amongst the late flowering varieties there was little of real note. Meri Luna, Carnival and Festival scored quite well across all the test charcateristics (plant vigour, flower head/bunching, leaf colour, earliness, flower production, size of flower head).
