Visiting the region "Boskoop" Queen takes an interest in tree nursery sector
During Queen Beatrix's visit to Boskoop and the region Rijn- en Gouwestreek on Tuesday 24 June, she showed a deep interest in the tree nursery sector. The Queen was offered two plants that were introduced that day as novelty. Those are Clematis 'Queen of Holland', introduced by J. van Zoest BV from Boskoop, and Hydrangea macrophylla 'Lady in Red' from Gebr. de Jong handelskwekerijen BV in Boskoop. The Boskoop ornamental plants centre is the oldest production area for woody nursery stock in the Netherlands. The production history dates back to the 15th century. This area is also the place where export to all continents started. In exports of trees and plants for gardens and public parks, the Netherlands has a share of well over 55% of the total cross-border global trade in this area.
Nurseries The queen visited two nurseries during her visit to Boskoop. The first nursery was tree nursery Van der Starre BV, that specialises in climbers. Their managing director Bart van der Starre explained to her the production process, the innovative techniques used in production, and the problems nurseries have to deal with in the central green region, known as the "Groene Hart". At the adjoining nursery of Gebr. De Jong handelskwekerijen BV, the gentlemen De Jong then briefly explained how the exporters of woody nursery stock operate.
World trade The royal visit was concluded with an informal reception. Jan Habets, managing director of Plant Publicity Holland (PPH), informed the distinguished visitor about the position the Netherlands has in world trade in this field. PPH is the promotion organisation of the Dutch tree nursery sector. Very many plants grown in the Netherlands find their way to gardens all over the world. Most of these remain within the European Union, but countries such as America and Canada
