The RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) of Great Britain undertook a trial of vegetatively raised Petunia hybrids at Wisley gardens in 2002. Plants were judged on their performance in hanging baskets and patio containers and more specifically on the continuity and evenness of flowering, colour, habit and overall weather resistance. Of the 76 entries submitted by various companies in Europe and the USA, only 12 were granted the RHS prestigious "Award of Garden Merit" 2002 given to those plants that "are of outstanding value for garden use". Amongst the award winners were four of the Conchita® varieties bred by Ushio Sakazaki and propagated/distributed through PW (Proven Winners). They were: Conchita® (Blueberry Frost (Conblue), Cranberry Frost (Concran), Evening Glow (Conglow) and Strawberry Frost (Con straw). The Conchita® series of Petunia is a trailing form, highly uniform within the series producing medium sized flowers in abundance. The habit is vigorous yet controlled producing globes of foliage that tumble from hanging baskets and support masses of flowers that smother the whole plant throughout the summer. No deadheading is required and only minimum care is needed. Within the Conchita® series, there are currently 9 single flowered varieties including 'Twilight Night' (dark velvet blue flowers) new for 2003 and an improvement on 'Violet Night'. Also new for 2003 is 'Pink Kiss' (vivid pink with a white eye). In the double flowered types there are 6 varieties. New for 2003 are: 'Doble Orchid Lace' (pink with dark veins) and 'Doble Velvet' (dark purple-pink flowers). The double flowered varieties share the same characteristics of the single types, except for the fact that they start flowering a little later and the overall appearance is improved if faded flowers are removed. The flowers are fully double. Other novelties in the Conchita® series for 2003 are two giant flowered varieties 'Grande Pink' and 'Grande White'. These varieties produce very large flowers and are extremely tolerant of adverse weather conditions. They are slightly more vigorous that standard Conchita® types.
