Stratum Environmental Technologies (Australia) have developed a new grassy surface that withstands heavy-duty football activity, a deluge of rain and reduces physical injury on impact. The product, named 'Stratum' is equally at home on a playing field as on a rofftop terrace and is available in a variety of different turfs. The product is environmental friendly and is made from recycled rubber-based materials. The material can be integrated with or without natural or synthetic turfs e.g. athletic and cycle tracks. The porous rubber surface permits a soak through rate up to 14,500mm/hour according to the precise composition of the substrate. There is never an accumulation of surface water. The surface is hard wearing and will support loads of up to 40kg/cm without damage (enabling normal vehicle traffic). Grass types are selected according to the application. The surface is also strong and stable and resists tearing, gouging; it can be easily repaired, replaced or re-sown. Lastly but not least the surface can be designed to recycle water and nutrients. The manufacturer has patented the manufacturing process; a chemical reaction locks the rubber and other components to bitumen. Grass roots grow through the rubber. The manufacturer claims that the surface is unrivalled for sporting venues because it can be installed with little or no soil.
