The top ten varieties in order of merit expressed as the average
evaluation by growers were as follows: "Cortez Burgundy" (Fischer),
"Freedom Red" (Ecke) and "Sonora White Glitter" (Fischer)
level pegging, "Christmas Dream" ( Selecta/HMA), "Orion Red"
(Fischer), "Prestige Red" and "Monet Twilight" (Ecke) level
pegging, "Nutcracker Salmon" and Nutcracker Pink (Oglevee) and "Da
Vinci" (Fischer) level pegging, "Malibu Pink New" (Dümmen).
Only 40% of the varieties rated in the top ten by growers were red varieties,
as opposed to 70% in the case of consumers. In some cases a low mark just by
one grower penalized average scores as in the case of "Coco Pink"
(Dümmen). Particularly high scores were given by growers for the following
varieties in terms of preference and interest to grow the next season: "Cortez
Burgundy" (48), Sonora White Glitter" (29), "Christmas Dream"
(15). Ohio Florists’ Association Bulletin No. 866 February 2002
