A new Greenhouse Integrated Control System (GHIS) is being
developed as the result of a contribution of Euro 1.850,000 (50% project value)
from the European Commission, under the CRAFT program. The project is coordinated
by the Industrial Union of the Province of Padova (Confindustria) and includes
a pool of 4 main European partners (Maniero Elettronics Sas, Padova (I);
Geoquip Services, Ipswich (GB); Siberline SA, Carmona-Siviglia
(ES); Argyriou SA, Ionnis Rentis (GK). Collaborating with these companies
are 5 research centres: GR Elettronica Srl, Vigonza Padova (I);
Biomass Technology Group, Enschede (NL); ATO/ Wageningen (NL);
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (IL); University of Padova
(I). Resulting innovation promises a low cost efficient closed production
system utilizing renewable energy sources; solar power and biogas obtained
from the fermentation of plant residues from production. Utilizing several pumps
working at low regime rather than a single pump will offer energy savings of
up to 50% in the irrigation system which will also reduce elecromagnetic disturbance
of control equipment. GHIS will also recycle water and nutrients and recover,
treatment and use rain water. Market analysis suggests that up 500 GHIS control
systems could be sold in Europe within the first 5 years. Unindustria Padova.
