A technique has been developed which makes possible genetic modification of
two thirds of the commercially availably varieties of Chrysanthemums. He has
also identified genetic promoters that ensure the genes incorporated into the
Chrysanthemums will be sufficiently active. At present the damage caused by
thrips can only be adequately prevented using insecticides. The genes in question
inhibit the activity of protease enzymes found in the digestive tract
of the thrips. In addition egg production was reduced by 50%. Many plants create
protease inhibitors quite naturally when attacked by insects. The next step
