Thrip resistant Chrysanthemums

The work of Mr. Seetharam Annadana at Plant Research International brings ecological cultivation of Chrysanthemums a step closer. A technique has been developed which makes possible genetic modification of two thirds of the commercially availably varieties of Chrysanthemums. He has also identified genetic promoters that ensure the genes incorporated into the Chrysanthemums will be sufficiently active. At present the damage caused by thrips can only be adequately prevented using insecticides. The genes in question inhibit the activity of protease enzymes found in the digestive tract of the thrips. In addition egg production was reduced by 50%. Many plants create protease inhibitors quite naturally when attacked by insects. The next step is to prove that the promise can be realized.
