A good quality potting mix is one of the most important investments
a grower can make, even when profit margins are thin. Cuttings costs is important, but
the quality of your potting mix should not be compromised. If growers do not
love the potting mixes that they are using, they should improve them! Good records
should be kept; when a crop was potted or spaced or when the last fertilizer
or pesticide application was made. This is wise not only from a legal point
of view but also to help overcome production problems as they arise. Calculate
production costs: prices for the finished product will be under pressure but
few growers know what their production costs are for various crops and pot sizes.
Such knowledge will help a grower to increase his prices by the right amount
at the right time. Lynn Griffith, GrowerTalks www.growertalks.com
