Two novel insecticide compounds called naphthoquinones have been extracted from Calceolaria andina, a species found in the Chilean Andes, and related to the ornamental species at IACR-Rothamstead in England. Further work by a research group led by Dr. Bhupinder Khambay has resulted in 4 worldwide patents on novel pesticide compounds. The mode of action and selectivity of these compounds is quite distinct from those of established insecticides. A partially synthetic derivative has substantially lower phytotoxicity whilst retaining a good insecticide activity. Improved formulations have led to commercial interest and the introduction of a new class of insecticide to which insects have not yet developed any resistance, is in sight. www.bbsrc.ac.uk E-mail: bhupinder.khambay@bbsrc.ac.uk
