Camellia: not only ornamental species

The Boscawen family of Cornwall, England, has planted several hectares of Tea (Camellia sinensis) on their Tregothnan estate as a commercial Tea production enterprise. The first crop from is due for picking in 2005 and the sale of the entire crop is being negotiated with selected tea connoisseurs in London. It appears that Camellia species and cultivars grown outdoors on this estate were the first Camellias to be grown in Great Britain out of doors (their cultivation traditionally took place under glass). The only other already existing 'tea estate' in Europe is located in Tuscany, Italy. The Estate in Cornwall is open for private group visits. RHS "The Garden".
